Juneteenth Madonna

“Mary is shown with her head bowed and her arms raised in praise as she contemplates her Son Jesus breaking the chains of slavery while standing in the healing waters of a Deep River. Jesus’ halo is a sunflower rising above the cotton fields behind Him.

Mary’s body is draped in a quilt of many diverse colors and patterns. Mother and Son are wrapped in a womb-like shape outlined in pink, the symbolic liturgical color of Gaudete Sunday, the “Let us rejoice” day of the Advent season.”

How is today’s image/reflection a “window” into the mystery of the Incarnation?

  1. Mary said YES to God the Creator, Father and Mother of us all. Her response reveals Jesus, our Brother and Redeemer, who teaches us how to open ourselves to God’s grace working within us. We are the heart of God’s providence today to break the chains of oppression. Let us rejoice in God’s presence with us.

  3. As the Spirt rests upon Her, all creation cries out with Joy. And we move from night into day, stepping from the waters of Baptism, free from the chains of slavery to sin.
