In Mary-Darkness
I live my Advent in the womb of Mary
And on one night when a great star swings free
From its high mooring and walks down the sky
To be the dot above the Christus i,
I shall be born of her by blessed grace.
I wait in Mary-darkness, faith’s walled place,
With hope’s expectance of nativity.
I knew for long she carried me and fed me,
Guarded and loved me, though I could not see,
But only now, with inward jubilee,
I come upon earth’s most amazing knowledge:
Someone is hidden in this dark with me.

This original painting seems to be lost at present.

This image is popularly known as “The Madonna of the Streets”, however it was not originally intended to depict the Virgin Mary.
Of particular interest is the young girl’s face. She wears a gold colored headdress, which provides a contrast to the blues, grays, and dirty whites of her clothing and that of the child. The whole piece suggests hardship. At the same time, the child is safely and comfortably asleep.

Esta imagen se conoce popularmente como “La Virgen de las Calles”, sin embargo, originalmente no tenía la intención de representar a la Virgen María.
De particular interés es el rostro de la joven. Lleva un tocado de color dorado, que contrasta con los azules, grises y blancos sucios de su ropa y la del niño. Toda la escena sugiere dificultades. Al mismo tiempo, el niño está durmiendo de forma segura y confortable.

Consider the following insight of Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) and the meaning it has for us in our time:
“We are all meant to be mothers of God” he said. “What good is it to me if this eternal birth of the divine Son takes place unceasingly but does not take place within myself? And, what good is it to me if Mary is full of grace if I am not also full of grace?
What good is it to me for the Creator to give birth to (the Son of God) if I also do not give birth to (Christ) in my time and my culture?”

Juneteenth Madonna
“Mary is shown with her head bowed and her arms raised in praise as she contemplates her Son Jesus breaking the chains of slavery while standing in the healing waters of a Deep River. Jesus’ halo is a sunflower rising above the cotton fields behind Him.
Mary’s body is draped in a quilt of many diverse colors and patterns. Mother and Son are wrapped in a womb-like shape outlined in pink, the symbolic liturgical color of Gaudete Sunday, the “Let us rejoice” day of the Advent season.”

“Se muestra a María con la cabeza inclinada y los brazos levantados en alabanza contemplando a su Hijo Jesús rompiendo las cadenas de la esclavitud mientras Él está de pie en las aguas sanadoras del Río Jordán. El halo de Jesús es un girasol que se levanta sobre los campos de algodón como fondo detrás de Él.
