First Sunday of Advent – November 28, 2021

Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)

Painting by Sister Louise Kovalovsky, CDP, 1977.

The Lady of the Annunciation is an image of human freedom. By her “yes” she freely chose Life.(Frank Zbozny “A Medievalist Recalls His First Light on ‘Lady Day’” The Pittsburgh Catholic, March 25, 1994, 5.

Let us pray,
Surprising God of possibilities, send messenger angels to give us
the good news,
as you did Mary. Awaken us again to our your dreams for us. Lure us to follow your desire to birth your kingdom among us. Open our hearts to listen for your whisper
In the ordinary, in the extra ordinary, in the most expected and unexpected situations and conditions. We ask this prayer in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen

How is today’s image/reflection a “window” into the mystery of the Incarnation?

  1. Incarnation… Expectation, and openness from my part, and abundance of love from God…

  2. This poem entitled “Annunciation” by the late Irish theologian, John O’Donohue beautifully captures the poignancy of the moment that forever altered humanity’s relationship with God.

Cast from afar before the storms were born
And rain had rinsed the darkness for colour,
The words have waited for the hunger in her
To become the silence where they could form.

The day’s last light frames her by the window,
A young women with distance in her gaze.
She could never imagine the surprise
That is hovering over her life now.

The sentence awakens like a raven, fluttering and dark,
Opening her heart to nest the voice
    That first whispered the earth,
From dream into wind, stone, sky and ocean,

She offers to mother the shadow’s child,
Her untouched life becoming wild inside.
